I read a lot of profiles which complain bitterly about 'trolls'. Of course we all 'meet' them at some point during our online lives - they're just a fact of life, like wasps at a picnic.I found a wonderful article on web trolls written by someone who clearly understands the phenomenon, and I've taken some of the quotes from the article and pasted them below - it's well worth a read:
Trolls see Internet communications services as convenient venues for their bizarre game. For some reason, they don't 'get' that they are hurting real people. To them, other Internet users are not quite human but are a kind of digital abstraction. As a result, they feel no sorrow whatsoever for the pain they inflict. Indeed, the greater the suffering they cause, the greater their 'achievement' (as they see it). At the moment, the relative anonymity of the net allows trolls to flourish.
When you try to reason with a troll, he wins. When you insult a troll, he wins. When you scream at a troll, he wins. The only thing that trolls can't handle is being ignored.It can be difficult to ignore someone who seems to be making a personal attack on us. Please remember it isn't personal - you just happen to be the nearest target. Treat then like you would wasps at a picnic - ignore them and their angry buzzing and eventually they'll go away.And keep smiling - some of us are actually real people on here! A day of industry for me today! Cleaned out all the old journal entries, and spent a pleasant half hour or so perusing profiles. Some were desperately sad in their negativity and mistrust, some were laughable in their ludicrous self-importance, but one or two were wonderful in their honesty and humour. If I had been looking, I'd have been drawn immediately to their profiles. As it is, all I can say is keep it up people, keep smiling, and don't let the pond-scum at the shallow end of the gene pool get you down!A day of industry for me today!
