I'm still amazed at the amount of misinformation, circular logic and just plain ignorance that comprises the majority of the conversations. If these people, as well as the newly curious, continue to use the chat rooms as a substitute for actual experience... despite their good intent... it's unavoidable that people will be hurt, confused, and unnecessarily poisoned against this lifestyle. They're doing more to hurt the lifestyle than help it. It's like allowing a roomful of gamers to fight a real war. I attended a goth party, and although many of the attendees were considerably younger, and part of a culture that's indirectly related to bdsm, I found many like-minded, experienced individuals as well. It was refreshing to know that a local, serious-minded group exists, even if they are underground. PR is a closed culture, despite the outsiders' image of this being a "wild, party island''. The folks that are seriously involved in this lifestyle know they need to keep their interests hidden from the public.All in all, the contacts I made were invigorating, and reaffirmed many of my personal views on the true nature of a D/s relationship. My perspective, that a Dominant functions as a mentor, seems to be a shared one. I was pleased to know that I was not alone in my ideas about shepherding, guiding and mentoring. I've always believed strongly in the responsibilities that go along with being a Dominant, and do not take the role lightly.
